Frankly

"At that particular moment, the decision to leave seemed to be the only way to protect children from persecution, parents from humiliation at work, and to finally reunite our divided family, although in a foreign country. My husband wished to go but I tried to keep the idea out of my mind until the very last dreadful moment."

- An excerpt from a diary of a Byelorussian asylum holder.

In the “Frankly” project, women from Somalia, Byelorussia, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Ukraine, Chechnya and Afghanistan write about their lives.

The project aims to map the process of integration of female foreigners into the Czech society, their experiences and views, and to draw attention to the greatest pitfalls encountered in the process.

Several different activities are pursued in the course of the project: qualitative sociological research, multicultural women’s groups, and writing of biographic diaries. These activities share certain themes: gender roles and status of women in the family, relationships, community, at work and in the public sector, and the role of traditions and religion in the shaping of gender roles and stereotypes. The outcome of the project is a sociological study on the life of female foreigners in the Czech Republic, and their cultural, social and gender differences. A second outcome is a methodology for a gender and culturally sensitive work with female foreigners.

The project is financed by the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs of the Czech Republic, and conducted in collaboration with the Organization for Aid to Refugees (OPU) and the civic association Sofia.
