The phenomenon of rapidly growing number of migrants coming to Europe has also become a hot issue in the Czech Republic in recent couple of years. Czech society has to find ways for a peaceful coexistence.

It is also crucial to reflect on the gender dimension of migration - espcially when designing new laws and regulations. It is important to realize the fact that women play an important role in this process and their needs and problems are sometimes very different from those faced by male migrants.

The Czech Women's Lobby has issued a new publication called " Promoting gender equality: selected topics". It is a result of a six-month's project of the CZL focussed on promoting gender equality during the Czech EU presidency. Our organisation compiled on of the chapters, which was focussed on situation of migrant women in the Czech Republic.

"Migrant Women in the Czech Republic – Are They a Burden or an Asset?"
The round table is organised by the European Contact Group in frame of the project Promoting Gender Equality in the Period of the Czech EU Presidency.

What does the Czech Republic offer to migrant women and what do they offer to the Czech Republic?
What is their asset?
Is it an important target group for the Czech politicians?
Do migrant women face multiple discrimination?
Will the antidiscrimination law help to solve the worst cases of discrimination?
 

The average gender pay gap in Europe is 17 %, women are largely underrepresented at decision-making levels in EU institutions, violence against women is persistent throughout Europe, and women’s right to abortion is being denied or restricted in several EU countries. These are some of the reasons why women’s movements remain mobilized throughout Europe.

[Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, 4 Feb. 2009] In an effort to better understand current trends in women’s migration and their impact on policy, the United Nations International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (UN-INSTRAW) released the results of two Virtual Dialogues held in September and November 2008.
The two Dialogues brought together experts from around the globe to examine migration and development from a gender perspective.

The following article is a summary of selected findings and recommendations derived from a qualitative survey which were released in a publication titled “ Discrimination against Refugees in the Czech Republic from a Gender Perspective ”. The publication is an output of an eponymous research project conducted by European Contact Group in the Czech Republic from July 2007 to June 2008.
